The federal budget snapshot

Here it is, the latest Federal Budget announcement has some wins and some hits for small businesses. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Energy Bill Relief – Small businesses get up to $150 off their power bills plus grants of up to $25K for energy efficiency upgrades.

Tax Cuts – The first marginal tax rate drops from 16% to 14% (starting July 2026), which helps sole traders.

Instant Asset Write-Off Slashed – From July 2025, the threshold drops from $20K to just $1K, making it harder for businesses to invest in new equipment.

Support for Apprenticeships – More funding to get tradies into the workforce, with up to $10K for apprentices and $5K for employers hiring them.

Tighter Regulations – More oversight on franchising and cybersecurity initiatives to help businesses stay protected.

While there are some helpful measures, many business leaders feel the budget lacks long-term vision and doesn’t address bigger economic challenges. The biggest gripe? The cut to asset write-offs, which could hit small businesses looking to upgrade their equipment.
